Important Update: USPTO Trademark Filing Fees Increasing to $350 Per Class

On January 18, 2025, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will discontinue the TEAS Plus and TEAS Standard filing options and replace them with a single electronic “base application.” With this change, the new filing fee for electronically filed trademark applications under Sections 1 and/or 44 will be $350 per class—an increase from the current $250 per class fee.

Why the Increase?

  • Streamlined Application System: The USPTO is consolidating the TEAS Plus and TEAS Standard filing processes into a single base application format.

  • Additional Fees Possible: Applications not meeting specific base application requirements may incur extra fees for insufficient information, free-form text identifications, or exceeding character limits in the description of goods and services.

What Does This Mean for Applicants?

  • Higher Per-Class Fees: If you’re filing for multiple classes of goods or services, expect higher overall filing costs.

  • Stricter Requirements: To avoid extra charges, applicants must meet the new base application requirements (e.g., providing accurate, detailed identification of goods/services using the USPTO’s Acceptable Identification Manual).
